When a Line Needs to Be Located
Most calls come from people who are about to disturb the ground. A few come from people who have lost track of something that used to be easy to find.

- The cleanout was buried under landscaping or concrete years ago and nobody can find it.

- You are buying a home and want to know where the private lines run before you plan changes.
- An irrigation trench or tree planting is headed for the side yard.
How We Find a Buried Pipe
Sewer Laterals
For a sewer line we feed a sewer camera into the cleanout. A small transmitter near the camera head sends a signal up through the soil, and a receiver on the surface picks it up. We walk the line with the receiver, stop at every change in direction and paint or flag the spot. The receiver also gives a depth estimate at each mark, which matters when a contractor is deciding how carefully to dig.
The camera does double duty. While we trace the route we are also looking at the inside of the pipe, so if there is a sag, an offset joint or roots at the spot you plan to dig near, you hear about it now instead of after the trench is open.
Metal Water Lines
Copper and older galvanized water services carry a tone signal well. We connect a transmitter to the pipe at an exposed point, usually near the meter or where the line enters the house, and trace the signal across the yard.
Plastic Water Lines
PVC and PEX are harder because plastic does not carry a signal. Depending on access we may push a traceable rodder through the pipe, listen for flow noise, or hand-dig small test holes at the points that matter most. When the answer is less certain, we say so plainly and mark it that way.

Utility Marking and Private Lines Are Not the Same Thing
In Southern California you call 811 through DigAlert before digging, and the utilities mark what they own. That usually stops at the meter or the property line. The sewer lateral from your house to the main, and the water service from the meter to your house, are private lines, and 811 does not mark them. That gap is where a private locate comes in. After the Line Is Marked
Once the route is on the ground, you can plan around it or plan the repair. If the camera showed damage, we can talk through sewer repair and replacement or a trenchless option, and the marks we left become the starting point for that work.

Usually not. DigAlert notifies the utilities, and they mark the lines they own, which normally end at the meter or the property line. The lateral from your house to the sewer main and the water service from the meter to your house are private, so they need a private locate like ours.
Often, yes. We can sometimes get the camera in through a pulled toilet or another opening. If there is no practical way in, we will explain what adding a cleanout involves and whether it is worth doing for your plans.
It is harder than metal pipe because plastic does not carry a tracing signal. We use a traceable rodder where we can get one inside, listen for flow, or dig small test holes at the spots that matter. We mark anything we are less sure of so nobody treats a guess as a certainty.
We use marking paint on soil and concrete and flags on lawns and planters, with a mark at each bend and at the spots you told us you plan to dig near. We also tell you the depth estimate the receiver gave at those points.
