Choosing the Right Replacement

A tank that’s too small runs out halfway through the morning; one that’s too big costs more to keep hot. Tank, Heat Pump or Tankless?

For most straight replacements, a new tank of the same fuel is the least disruptive choice, because the gas line, vent and space are already there. A heat pump tank costs more to buy but uses far less energy to run, and it suits a garage with room around it. Tankless makes sense when you want continuous hot water and are prepared for new venting and a larger gas supply. There’s no single right answer; the house usually decides, and we’d rather talk you out of an upgrade that doesn’t fit than into one.

• Check the shutoff valve, the gas connector and the flue for condition
• Set the new heater, level it and install the seismic straps
• Connect water and gas or power, and run the relief line to an approved discharge point
• Add a thermal expansion tank where the plumbing is a closed system
• Fill the tank, purge the air, fire it up, and test for leaks and proper draft
• Book the inspection and walk you through the finished install
