Over the Counter Drain Cleaning
It good to know that over the counter drain cleaners are best used for slow draining sinks, toilets, and tubs. Using them for completely stopped plumbing usually just compounds the problem by just adding substance to the clog. Additionally, many of the chemicals in drain cleansers are not good for the environment. For clogged plumbling systems, a do it yourselfer’s better option is renting an auger, better known as the “snake”.
Snakes
If not used properly a snake can cause serious injury even to an experienced plumber. The best point to use a snake is at a cleanout access point. If you do not know where it is, ask a good local plumber. Always keep the minimum amount of cable exposed as possible. Doing so will help you to avoid getting hurt. If you do not feel comfortable, call a professional. It is always best to be safe than sorry.
